Various wheelchairs and wheelchair parts
Wheelchairs have come a long way (silly pun intended). Many improvements have been added over the decades, and many variations have been created on the original concept. Some of those are impossible to file under a specific category, so that's why this section on various wheelchairs and wheelchair parts is added: if it doesn't fit elsewhere, it fits here.
Some of the changes in the ways wheelchairs are designed and constructed, are pretty self-evident. When wheelchairs were first designed over 200 years ago, people were shorter than we are now, and the chairs were of course fitted to their sizes. In our 21st century, with the average height of men only slightly under 6 feet, an "old" size wheelchair is very uncomfortable for the rider and for the person who pushes the chair who is also much taller than the pushers of old, and has to bend over and use his lower back and shoulders to operate the chair. Thankfully there are kingsize wheelchairs now, including some very special models, which you can ususally find on this page.Another big drawback of small standard wheelchairs is the low seat height, which is considerably below the normal seat height. If you sit in such a low wheelchair and want to talk to others, make purchases at checkout stands, or use sinks and mirrors at public restrooms, you'll inevitably find that your chair is too low for comfort.
There are special high wheelchairs now, with armrests swinging up and out of the way, basically designed for transporting people and not for self-propulsion. Due to being slightly higher the passenger doesn't have to look up so far, and the attendant can walk straighter. Often these transport chairs are comfortably fitted with solid seats and backs with padded cushions.
