Manually propelled wheelchairs

In the early 2000's I used to propel myself along the longer distances either in a little cart with a gas engine, or with my electric mobility scooter. Shorter distances I could easily walk with the help of a crutch or, on days when physical things went relatively smoothly, a walking stick. But lazy as I am, I greatly enjoyed my powered vehicles for the longer distances!
However, I'm a self-confessed wimp, certainly when compared with my friend Jan who stubbornly stuck with his manual wheel chair, which he used on distances where I gladly took the scooter. His philosophy was very straightforward: "I don't have much power in my legs, but I'll compensate for that with my upper body strength!" Well, that sums it up nicely. Jan had the strongest and most impressive shoulders, biceps, triceps etcetera that I've ever seen on a non-body builder! And his was the fastest wheelchair in the world!
Indeed, if you're physically able to propel a manual wheelchair, you'll be surprised how much it can do for you and how far it can take you. Or rather: how far you can take yourself with its help.
