A fixed cane may be sufficient to increase your mobility!
Learning how to walk with your cane, crutch or walking stick
No, it's not difficult - there are just a few common sense hints and tips for efficiently expanding your mobility throuh the use of a walking cane, walking stick or crutch. Yes indeed, the basic rules for a single crutch are the same as for a cane.
Which hand should hold the walking stick?Generally it's better and more comfortable to hold the stick in the hand that is opposite to the side where the weakness or the injury is. Sure, there can be situations where the stick should be on the disabled side, but try the opposite side first - it really is better in nearly all cases.Just about everybody gets it wrong the first time - even the bandaged bloke in the pic! But we can't really blame him: the hand on his "good" side is bandaged...
Getting started
In order to get "out of the starting blocks" you should begin by putting your full weight on the good (or stronger) leg. Then you step forward with your affected leg and the walking stick simultaneously, putting your weight on the combination of your weak leg and the stick. Then you can step forward with your good leg again, and so on. Rinse and repeat. Mind: never put any leg or stick out too far in front of you - your stride should be somewhat shorter than, or at the very most equal to, the length it was when you used towalk without a walking stick.
Upstairs, downstairs
When going upstairs, put your good leg on the first step. Then haul your weak leg and the walking stick up on that very same step, and calmly repeat the procedure until you are where you want to be. Going downstairs is the exact opposite. First lower your bad leg and the walking stick on the top step, then bring the good leg down on the same step. Keep hobbling downward this way, and you'll be safe.
Here's a final note. Don't walk around with a crutch if a cane will do the job equally well - always go for the "lowest option" that is safe. Also, a fixed cane tends to make you look less handicapped and more "old worldly elegant" than a folding cane. In the vast majority of "simple accident" cases a fixed cane is sufficient to increase your mobility.
